When to Book Your Hotel: Early, Late, or at Just the Right Moment?

What booking early really buys you

Booking early doesn't always buy the best price — it buys choice. The best-located hotels, the family rooms, the properties in highest demand go first. If your trip has hard constraints — fixed dates, a specific neighbourhood, a particular room — booking early is almost always the right decision, because what you risk losing by waiting isn't a few euros: it's the hotel itself.

If you do book early, go for a cancellable rate. You keep the benefit of choice without giving up the chance to catch a price drop later.

What booking late can win you — and what it risks

As the date approaches, a hotel with unsold rooms would rather sell them cheap than not at all. That's the principle behind last-minute deals. It works best where supply is plentiful — big cities, away from major events — and much less well in a small resort at the height of the season, where sometimes nothing is left at all.

Last minute is therefore a gamble: possible savings, reduced choice. It suits travellers who are flexible about the hotel, the neighbourhood, even the destination. It suits families and constraint-heavy trips poorly.

The periods that change the rules

Around big events — trade fairs, festivals, sporting competitions, local celebrations — the usual rules no longer apply: prices climb early and don't come back down. If your dates overlap with an event like this, book as soon as you can. In low season, by contrast, almost every strategy works out much the same: supply exceeds demand and prices stay sensible.

The right reflex before booking: check what's happening in the city on your dates. Five minutes of research avoids nasty surprises in both directions — paying too much, or discovering a city that's fully booked.

In practice

Fixed dates or heavy demand expected: book early, on a cancellable rate if possible. Flexible dates and a destination with plenty of hotels: you can afford to wait and compare regularly. Either way, comparing several platforms on the same dates remains the single move that pays back the most for the time it takes.
