Services, space, kitchen, cleaning, check-in: the real differences between a hotel, an aparthotel, and a rental — and the right formula for your trip length and style.
What each option does well
A hotel sells services: a front desk at any hour, daily housekeeping, breakfast, someone to talk to when there's a problem. A rental sells space and independence: a kitchen, a living room, several bedrooms, a washing machine. The aparthotel sits between the two: a fully equipped apartment with a reception desk.
No formula is "the best" in absolute terms. Each wins on different ground, and the right choice comes down to three simple questions: how many nights, how many people, and do you want to cook?
Length of stay changes the maths
For one or two nights, a hotel is hard to beat: easy arrival, no inventory checks, quick departure. The fixed costs of a rental — cleaning and service fees — weigh heavily when spread over a single night.
From several nights onward, the logic gradually flips. The fixed costs get diluted, the kitchen starts saving you the cost of meals, and the space becomes real comfort. For a week or more, especially with a family, the rental or aparthotel often takes the lead — provided you can live with fewer services.
Travelling as a group
From four people upward, always compare the price of two hotel rooms with that of an entire apartment. A two-bedroom flat often costs less than two double rooms — and adds a living room. It's one of the cases where the rental wins most clearly.
For a family with young children, the kitchen and the washing machine aren't comfort: they're one less thing to organise. Conversely, on a short business trip, hotel service — pressing, an early breakfast, a taxi called by reception — earns its price.
The lines to check before you book
For a rental: the cleaning and service fees (added to the displayed price), the check-in hours, the deposit, and the cancellation policy — often stricter than a hotel's. For a hotel: what the price covers (breakfast, parking, tourist tax) and the latest check-in time. Comparing the options only makes sense on the final, all-in price, for the same dates.
